James Smith Timber, established in 1927 and based in Birmingham, is a leading importer of Softwoods & Frame Grade Birch sourced from major producers in Scandinavia, Germany and the Baltic States as well as sheet materials from Europe, South America and the Far East.
In late 2018, Steve Donnithorne from James E Smith contacted West Mercia Fork Trucks Sales Manager David Pugh with regard to two 4000kg Diesel Counterbalances. David promptly organised a site survey at the Birmingham based company, and quoted up-rated 4500kg machines with side-shift. A deal was swiftly arranged between James E Smith Timber and West Mercia Fork Trucks.
Steve stated ‘right from the very first meeting, we knew West Mercia, and their Doosan forklifts were the best choice for us. It was a pleasure working with David Pugh, and nothing was too big an ask. We have even had radios installed in the trucks for our drivers!’

In January 2019, a further fork truck was required to fit into smaller racking, but a used truck was the preferred option. West Mercia supplied a 2015 Doosan D25S-5 to Steve at James E Smith Timber. Steve explained ‘yet again, we have have had wonderful service from West Mercia, and purchased a nearly new forklift that looks absolutely literally brand new. Another fantastic addition to our fleet.’
